Following on from Part 1 (History of Social Networking), this three part series we will look closer at this area of free traffic and how we as marketers can benefit to improve our return on investment.

There is a great deal of noise associated with Web 2.0 traffic, and rightly so. The number of visitors that arrive at social bookmarking sites everyday is astounding. Using the correct technique, some of this extraordinary amount of free traffic that flows into these sites can be funnelled towards your own landing pages 24/7 simply by submitting links to your articles.

So, what exactly are social bookmarking web sites?

They are a service focusing on building online communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

Social bookmarking has created powerful new ways to communicate and share information. Social bookmarking websites are being used regularly by millions of people, and it now seems that social bookmarking will be an enduring part of everyday life.

They are web based applications that allow the user to store and save bookmarks online instead of in a web browser or computer. The difference between storing a bookmark online socially, compared to storing the bookmark on your own computer is that the bookmark is saved and displayed online for anyone to view.

Social bookmarking sites allow users to utilise keywords to tag and categorise anything on the internet that the user feels is important or can benefit others. Visitors to these sites are swelling exponentially allowing social bookmarking to become an increasingly popular method for categorising, locating, sharing and ranking articles, news, press releases, stories etc… over the web via tagging.

All you have to do is pay a visit to a social bookmarking site, open up an account, then bookmark via keywords any interesting or valuable content. As marketers, this opens up an entire field that can be exploited for your benefit.

By following the above procedure you are in effect creating a useful feed that others may visit by using the keywords that trigger your bookmark. You can be docile or aggressive adding bookmarks to as many of your products or content as you want giving your areas of interest traffic exposure.

The process of social bookmarking is concerned with sharing information and gaining exposure. As it is done in a social context, ensure you follow the rules and make it interesting for others. As marketers we can share our landing page links, resource links, blogs and content links, etc.
By sharing in this way you are in actual fact, promoting your products and content.

There is no shortage of social bookmarking sites coming online as seen in the following list at Over 60 Social Networking Sites. Even takeovers and mergers are occurring so early in the social networking stage of development.

Some social bookmarking websites such as, Digg and StumbleUpon have been increasing in their popularity so fast that experienced marketers are using this secret to advertise their landing pages higher up in the search results list, and rank of search engines. What more can  a marketer want.

Digg
This is one social bookmarking site you should keep on your radar.
Digg has been developed for people to discover and share content by submitting links and stories, and then voting and commenting on those links and stories submitted. Voting is the site's cornerstone feature which leads to the raising or burying of submitted material.

Many submissions are received every day, but only the most popular stories appear on the front page. Digg has been so popular it has lead to the creation of other social networking sites that use the story submission and voting method.

Digg is a very fashionable social website that you would be amiss not to use right away. Currently, it has an Alexa rank of 116, meaning that it is the 116th most visited website in the world, according to Alexa’s traffic tracking service. The more “diggs” or votes you receive the greater your ranking.

The following simple steps will help you to get start submitting your links to Digg.

1. Go to
http://www.digg.com and sign up for an account.
2. Submit the link to your website or blog where the story is at.
This is different from article directories in that you don’t have to
upload your articles. You simply create a bookmark to your
articles for people to visit, comment and rate.
3. Choose your media, that is, whether you are submitting an
    article, video or image.
4. Give your story a catchy headline and description to entice
people to read it, and also add a nice picture to go along with the
    article.
5. Choose the topic of your article using one of the options shown.
6. Submit your story. Finished.

You can also comment on other people’s posts that are in the front page. You can use the commentary feature to your advantage by making interesting comments that are relevant and in this way you can attract other comments and visitors to visit your website.

How To Submit To Other Social Bookmarking Sites
There are a great deal of other bookmarking sites that also drive traffic to your landing pages as can be seen from the link given earlier (Over 60 Social Networking Sites). One site worth a mention is OnlyWire as you are able to submit to over twenty other popular social bookmarking sites at the same time, saving a lot of effort.

Here is the process:
1. Go to
http://www.onlywire.com and open an account.
2. Register with all the other social bookmarking sites that can be
    used with OnlyWire.
3. Input your username and password of your other accounts into
    OnlyWire.
4. Drag the OnlyWire bookmark link “save page” onto your toolbar
5. Go to the web page where your article is publish and click on
    the “save page” button
6. Insert your web site’s title, description, tags or keywords
    relevant to your article.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for every new page that you have.

Using the above methods explained above you will be able to vastly improve your search engine presence and provided an acceptable free way to increase traffic and back links. Don’t stop at Digg and OnlyWire use the other links as well. Get started now!
